The internet has been abuzz after Aimée Morrison, an Associate Professor at The University of Waterloo, tweeted about some jammies she saw at Target.
What happened next?
People LOST THEIR MINDS.
And not in a good way…
I was completely shocked reading the online comments. Here are a few gems:
For me, the worst part was realizing that just a few months ago I was in the “Who cares” camp. I’d probably say something like, “C’mon! They’re just sleepers! Get over it!”
My “Who cares” attitude changed over the summer after I watched this video:
At the end of the video I was left feeling sad. And embarrassed.
I was part of the problem and I DIDN’T EVEN KNOW IT.
That’s the thing with sexism.
It is so pervasive in our culture that we don’t even notice we’re doing it.
So those cute little pink jammies don’t look so cute to me anymore.
They’re a reminder that I need to be more aware of my words and what I’m REALLY saying with comments like “Don’t worry your pretty little head” or “Grow a pair.”
That statements and messages implying masculine = better & smarter and feminine = weaker & inferior are NOT OKAY.
So I’m working on it.
I’m working on choosing my words more carefully.
Because you know what?
They really REALLY matter.
